According to Rabbi Shais Taub, in a Huffpost article, addiction is like this "giant black hole that can devour the light of a thousand suns and remain just as unfathomably black as if no sun had ever shone at all. It is an insatiable vortex that mercilessly consumes every iota of strength that human power can muster. We throw love at it. We throw loyalty at it. We scream at it. We bargain with it. We fight it. And when we just can't fight it anymore, we swear to ignore it, to never let it hurt us again, that is, until it pulls us back in."

He also has this message: "Please know that it's not that you haven't tried everything there is to try. It's not that you're not good enough, strong enough, smart enough, determined enough. You could multiply your efforts and your will power by literally a million times, you could have the whole world on your side, and still face the same heartbreaking outcome in the end. "

Addiction comes in many forms; Drug, alcohol, sex, shopping, or even something that seem silly like, cake. However, what one person think is silly might just be the reason why another person's life is ruined. I read the article by Rabbi Shais Taub with a sinking feeling. For the first time, I was overwhelmed by the very notion that no matter what you're addicted to, curing the addiction is not as easy as some people perceive it to be. Other people can't fix it for you. Most of the time, you can't fix it yourself either. What I believe is somewhat (painfully) easier would be to manoeuvre around the cracks. Yes, I agree; not really curing it, but still something at least. As cliche as it may be, something is at times really better than nothing at all. Don't judge someone for not curing herself. Sometimes, there's only enough strength left inside to crawl around the big black hole instead of taking the cement and close it entirely.

we relapse, we bite the forbidden fruit, we let it run our lives to the ground yet somehow, we need the addiction. for some people that's the only security blanket that we can hold on to, the perverse income of our strength to stagger on.

True. The fuel that keeps the twisted engine running.
